Barack Obama: International Man of Mystery
The lack of personal testimonials at the DNC coronation must leave Democrats uneasy.

Barack Obama’s choice of Joe Biden as running mate hasn’t helped him in the polls, and it has highlighted Obama’s lack of experience in matters of foreign policy and national security, but more than that it has given Republicans additional grounds to question Obama’s judgment. At first glance the addition of the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a man with 35 years in the Senate, might seem the perfect balance to a ticket headed by a candidate with very little experience. The fit might look perfect on paper, but the reality does not quite live up to the promise. A look at Joe Biden’s recent foreign policy judgment says a lot more about a possible Obama presidency than the fact that Biden has been in the Senate for 3 ½ decades. Read more… »

Senator Barack Obama is now officially the Democratic presidential nominee. It’s done, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton just came to the center of her New York delegation and asked the Democratic National Convention to declare by acclamation that Barack Obama is officially the party’s presidential nominee and that’s what it did. Hillary Clinton came out representing New York minutes ago and proclaimed that her state was giving all of their votes to Senator Obama, then she called for an affirmation to suspend the roll call and vote as one body to support Barack Obama as president. Nancy Pelosi asked for a second, there were hundreds, and she asked for a vote, the house roared, and she announced he is the official nominee of the Democratic party. We’ve made history. The first woman Speaker of the House announced it and the first viable woman candidate for president did her duty for the good of the party and the country.

New York’s political leaders crowded around the New York state delegation microphone, in a drawn-out introduction of the Empire State’s roll call vote. There are some of the picture :

The entire convention rose to its feet as Assembly Speaker and State Delegation Chair Sheldon Silver introduced “the great senator from New York, Senator Hillary Clinton.”

With appreciation for the spirit and dedication of all who are gathered here. With eyes firmly fixed on the future, in the spirit of unity. With the goal of victory. With faith in our party and our country. Let’s declare together, in one voice, right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate.

Cheers fill the hall.

I propose that the convention suspend the procedural rules and suspend the further conduct of the role call vote. All votes cast by the delegates will be counted and that I know, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, be selected by this convention, by acclamation…

Cheers drown out Clinton’s voice. Cheers of “Hillary! Hillary! Hillary!”…replaced with “Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can!”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asks for a second of Clinton’s motion. - Massive cheers.

A vote for aye?  - Resoundant “aye!”

Cue “Love Train”

Cheers so happy so happy for that.
